Frail Care Centre

The Herfsakker old age home has a frail care unit, which can accommodate 32 residents. The unit provides sub-acute nursing care services to frail older and disabled persons. A chief professional nurse, four professional nurses and a team of auxiliary nurses assisted by health care workers, heads the frail care unit. All our professional nurses have many years of experience in geriatric nursing care. The main objective of the frail care unit is to improve the quality of life and maintain the dignity of the very frail older or disabled person.

Patients are accommodated in single, two- bed and four-bed rooms. Ablution facilities are shared. Patients are assisted with all activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, getting dressed, etc. All patients are treated according to acceptable nursing plans, guidelines, policies, standards and practice. All medication is administered and monitored by a qualified professional nurse.

Alzheimer Unit

The Herfsakker old age home has a specialized unit that provides for the special needs of persons living with Alzheimer's disease. The unit is separate from the other facilities of the home and can accommodate 12 residents. Each resident has his or her own bedroom. The ablution facilities are shared. Although Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, it is of utmost importance to maintain their dignity at all times. It is our aim to protect our residents from any form of harm associated with the disease. We do not only provide in their physical needs, but also engage them in various activities to optimise their functioning and emotional well-being. The unit functions under the supervision of a professional nurse and a team of dedicated health care workers.
