Herfsakker is regarded as a modern frail care centre that serves the community of the Mpumalanga province. It has a large corps of active volunteers and the involvement of the local community is applauded. Herfsakker was awarded with the trophy as the most outstanding SAVF old age home in Mpumalanga for 2006.

The History of SAVF Herfsakker Old Age Home
Ms Cecilia van Wyk identified the need for an old age home and with the help of her husband, the mayor at that time, founded Herfsakker Old Age Home in 1979. Cecilia van Wyk, a volunteer worker for the South African Women’s Federation (SAVF), involved the organization and managed to raise funds by gaining the support of prominent business people and the municipality. Land was obtained and the goal of offering care, nutrition and socializing for older persons was achieved.
The Herfsakker Old Age Home is a member of the South African Women’s Federation –
a registered national welfare organization. Furthermore, the home is registered
with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services as a frail care center
and the National Department of Social Development as a non-
The SAVF is a community driven project and is managed by volunteers and a dedicated team of employees. The constitution of the SAVF was amended in recent years to allow men to become members of the organization.
